Prague in Detail: Five Historical Districts

  • City Sightseeing
  • Prague
  • Private Tour Guide

Description

The Five Historical Districts

Prague used to be separated into five historical districts:

  1. Old Town
  2. New Town
  3. Jewish Ghetto
  4. Lesser Town
  5. Prague Castle (Hradcany)

Medieval towns were developed individually with their own town halls, town administrators, and citizens. Therefore if you really want to see Prague and learn about its get off the beaten tracks parts and become Prague “insider”, I recommended arranging two half days private walking tours with a lunch break.

DAY 1

1st day three districts on one side of Vltava River (Old Town, New Town and Jewish Ghetto)…to give you ideas please see short descriptions for each historical town

Prague Old Town

The Old Town of Prague is dated to the early 10th century when craftsmen and traders from all over Europe began to establish a large marketplace on the Old Town Square. Later they went on to establish their own Town Hall, which now boasts the most admired Astronomical Clock, Tyn Church, Tyn (Ungelt) – the old customs house…

Prague New Town

The New Town of Prague was established by Charles IV. in the 14th century, and was at that time the largest town in Europe, bigger than both London or Paris. The main sights to be seen in the New Town are Wenceslas Square, the National Theatre, Cubistic candelabrum.

Prague Jewish Quarter

The Jewish Quarter – first notes about the Jewish community in Prague are dated to the end of 10th century, during the tour you will see the Old New (the oldest one in Europe), beautiful Art Nouveau architecture, Hebrew Clock, Franz Kafka Memorial sculpture… The walk includes a lunch break in traditional Czech Restaurant and ends with a drink in an authentic pub…

DAY 2

To continue the detailed expedition of Prague, the 2nd-day tour shows the other side of the river bank beginning with passing across the Charles Bridge through Lesser Town (or Little Prague Quarter) and with visiting Prague Castle. To give you ideas please see short descriptions of each historical town.

Charles Bridge

One of Prague’s and the world’s famous architectural icons, this Gothic Bridge built from mortar mixed with eggs in the 14th century, complete with its 3 beautiful bridge towers and decorated with 30 baroque statues, has a mystic side with its legendary five-star symbol. People have for centuries touched the legend-wrapped symbol entrusting their dreams here. Ancient legend says – once you touch the mystic five star sign your wish will become true…!

Lesser Town

Beautiful renaissance houses and palaces, Baroque and Rococo decoration and statues with the amazing baroque church of St. Nicholas built by Kilian Ignac Dientzenhofer – the centrepiece of Lesser Town, also known as the Little Quarter. It is occupied by a rampart called the Hungry Wall, while the Mannerist Church of Infant Jesus of Prague, with the Venice of Prague called Kampa Island and Devil’s Stream, will make you feel like you’re in a fairy tale whilst exploring its narrow winding streets.

Prague Castle

Prague Castle Town Hradcany with monumental Gothic Cathedral represents the “Crown of Prague”! During our walk we will visit the interior of St. Vitus Cathedral, pass through 3 castle courtyards up to Pohorelec to Strahov Monastery area, where is possible to make a lunch break in Monastic Brewery and taste the “holy” beer of St. Norbert.
